Bad luck was the name of the game for Team Top Kart USA at the final round of the Stars of Karting West championship held at Moran Raceway. The team came away with only one win provided by Camden Geise in the Cadet category. Saturday's event was a wild one in Cadet with lead changes almost every lap. Tyler Thomas took pole position followed by teammates Jacob Will in sixth, Camden Geise in seventh, Andrew Murray in eighth, and Luis Tyrrell in thirteenth. The Final was a crazy one with Tyler Thomas making a last lap pass for the win, but was later penalized for avoidable contact, which was not seen on the track. This gave the win to Geise who drove an excellent race. Andrew Murray was fifth followed by Tyrrell in sixth and Will in sixteenth. Sunday did not go as well for the drivers with Geise sixth, Will seventh, Murray eighth, Tyrrell twelfth, and Thomas seventeenth.
Chris Wehrheim came out for his first West appearance in ICA. Chris qualified eighth and finished sixth in the Prefinal. In the Final Chris finished third, but severely bruised his ribs, which made it very difficult to challenge for the win and forced him to sit out Sunday. Matt Jaskol stepped in to pull double duty while racing ICC and had a great showing. Matt qualified seventh and was running up front in the Final when he was black-flagged for his chain guard coming off.
Brendan Phinny, Brandon Underwood, and Pierce Baldus all showed well for the team with both Phinny and Underwood scoring podium finishes. Underwood narrowly missed winning the Saturday final after making a pass for the lead in the final corner, but a little contact hurt his exit speed coming onto the main straight and he would have to settle for second followed by Phinny in sixth. Underwood would also set the fastest lap of the race. Sunday would prove much better for Phinny with a second place finish. Underwood came from last to finish ninth with a sore back after being hit coming into the scales after Saturday's final.
Neil McCoy and Ty Matta joined Conor Daly for their first Stars appearances. Daly would capture Saturday's pole position with McCoy in second. McCoy led all but the last lap of the Final and set the fastest lap when he lost his brakes in the final laps. Daly was wrecked and Matta would finish a strong tenth after having problems earlier in the day. It seemed like deja vu on Sunday with Daly and McCoy taking one-two once again. Daly would go on to win the Prefinal in commanding fashion with McCoy having problems. Matta would put on an impressive performance and storm up to fourth place after starting last. The string of bad luck would not stop for the team as Daly would be punted off the track early in the race and would recover to finish tenth. Matta had a great run to finish fifth in his first Stars race ever. Daly now heads to the Stars Finale where he looks to secure the National championship.
Matt Jaskol was the lone ICC driver for the team his woes would continue in the West with his best finish being eighth in Saturday's Final. With Gary Carlton winning the West Championship, Jaskol is now the East Champion and heads into his hometown Las Vegas looking for his first win of the season.
Next up for the team is the final round of the WKA Manufacturer's Cup championship at New Castle Motorsports Park. Kyle Wiegand has all but locked up the TaG championship and now has his sites on the ICC title. Chris Wehrheim also looks to continue his win streak in TaG.
